Gynecomastia
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of glandular breast tissue in men, often caused by a hormonal imbalance. This condition can occur during puberty, but also in men over the age of 50, due to sudden hormonal changes. It can affect one breast or both, sometimes unevenly. Gynecomastia may be accompanied by pain, nipple sensitivity, and swelling. Often, gynecomastia is associated with lipomastia (pseudogynecomastia), where fatty tissue accumulates in the breast area, typically as a result of obesity.
When should you consider surgical treatment for gynecomastia?
If you experience discomfort or are dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, it’s time to consider surgery. Our specialists are here to guide you through the entire process, from the initial consultation to post-operative recovery.
When a man’s breasts resemble those of a woman due to these disorders, it can cause significant frustration. It’s difficult to conceal them under clothing, and these men often feel particularly uncomfortable going to the beach, where their breasts are directly exposed to the gaze of others. If gynecomastia does not resolve on its own, surgery is the solution.
What is the preparation for surgery?
Before gynecomastia surgery, it is essential to determine the underlying cause of the condition, which includes a consultation with an internist-endocrinologist.
The complete preparation for surgery is done at our clinic and is included in the price. It involves the following laboratory tests:
- Complete blood count
- Basic biochemical analyses with coagulation factors
- Blood type and Rh factor
It also includes:
- Internal medicine and cardiology examination with an EKG
- Chest X-ray with radiologist report
- Clinical examination by the anesthesiologist
- Breast ultrasound
It is necessary to shave hair in the underarms and chest area.
If you are a smoker, it is essential to quit smoking several weeks before the surgery, as smoking negatively affects circulation and the healing process, thereby prolonging recovery time.
Please note that you must refrain from eating or drinking anything at least 6-8 hours before the scheduled surgery. If you take aspirin, vitamin C, or other supplements, it is necessary to stop taking them seven days prior to surgery.
You should bring personal hygiene items, an identification document (ID card or passport), your complete medical documentation, and any medications that are part of your chronic therapy.
How is gynecomastia surgery performed?
The surgery begins with the administration of general anesthesia. An incision is made around the areola (the ring around the nipple), and the glandular tissue is removed. If the patient has excess fat tissue, it is also removed, typically through liposuction. If the nipples take on an unnatural position after the removal of a large amount of fat tissue, their position is surgically corrected.
The first dressing and check-up are done on the 3rd day after the surgery. Additional dressings are scheduled in consultation with the surgeon. The stitches are removed 14 days after the operation.
How long does gynecomastia surgery take?
Gynecomastia surgery typically lasts from 1 to 2 hours.
Will there be visible scars after gynecomastia surgery?
The surgeon always strives to make incisions in areas of natural skin folds to hide the scars. In any case, the scars fade over the course of a year and become barely noticeable. The result of an experienced surgeon’s work is symmetrical, masculine breasts. You will be able to confidently walk on the beach without a shirt.
What is the recovery after gynecomastia surgery?
Recovery typically takes 2-4 weeks. After the surgery, the patient will take antibiotics for 5-10 days. The first few days after surgery, it is recommended that the patient rest at home and take pain medication as needed. It is best for the patient to sleep on their back and avoid sleeping on their stomach for at least a month after the surgery.
Strenuous physical activities are not recommended in the first 14 days. After that, you can do push-ups, run, and swim. Six weeks after the surgery, you can lift weights at the gym.
Patients usually return to work 3-5 days after the surgery, provided they don’t have a physically demanding job.
Post-operative care:
After surgery, it is recommended to wear a specially designed vest or elastic bandage for 4 weeks.
Risks After Gynecomastia Surgery
As with any surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, infection, and slower scar healing. However, when the surgery is performed in a fully sterile environment and by an experienced surgeon following the recommended protocol, these risks are minimized.
