Calf augmentation

Why is calf augmentation with implants performed?

Underdeveloped or disproportionately thin calves in relation to the thighs or overall figure do not pose a medical issue but can cause psychological distress. This is true for both women and men, particularly those who have successfully developed other muscles through gym training but struggle to build their calf muscles.

Some individuals may have congenital deformities, such as asymmetry or structural irregularities (e.g., genu valgum or genu varum), or experience muscle atrophy in the lower legs.

For women, well-shaped calves can attract attention, especially when wearing short skirts, shorts, or high heels. Confidence is significantly boosted when the legs are aesthetically sculpted.

In all these cases, calf augmentation with implants can be a viable solution.

What should you consider before calf augmentation surgery?

Before undergoing calf augmentation with implants, you will have a consultation with the surgeon. During this consultation, the surgeon will explain the entire procedure and discuss all available options for your specific case.
To select the appropriate silicone implant, several factors must be taken into account, including the patient’s height, overall leg length, and the length of the calf itself. Additionally, attention must be given to the size and development of the muscles in the calf area. For this reason, all necessary measurements will be taken prior to the surgery.

What should you do before calf augmentation surgery?

All preoperative preparations are conducted at our clinic and are included in the price. These preparations include laboratory tests such as a complete blood count, basic biochemistry, coagulation factors, blood group, and Rh factor.

It also includes:

  • Internal medicine and cardiology evaluation with ECG.
  • Chest X-ray with a radiologist’s report.
  • Clinical evaluation by an anesthesiologist.

You will need to stop taking aspirin, vitamin C, or other supplements at least one week before the procedure.

It is important to refrain from consuming any food or drinks for at least 12 hours before the scheduled surgery. You must remove any nail polish or gel polish from your fingernails. Additionally, you should completely remove makeup, piercings, and jewelry. Avoid applying body lotion for 4–6 hours before the operation. A few days prior to surgery, ensure the legs are depilated.

You should bring personal hygiene items, a photo ID (ID card or passport), your complete medical documentation, and any medications that are part of your chronic therapy.

How is calf augmentation with implants performed?

Calf augmentation with silicone implants is performed under general anesthesia.

A horizontal incision, 3–4 cm in length, is made along one of the natural creases in the back of the knee. Due to the small size of the incisions, the resulting scars are short and almost unnoticeable. The silicone implant is placed beneath the muscle, on both the posterior and inner sides of the calf.

For patients with thin skin or short muscles, the edges of the implant may be visible in the final result. In such cases, a fat transfer is recommended during the same procedure or 3–6 months later to achieve a perfect appearance.

The surgery typically takes 1–2 hours to complete.

Once the procedure is finished, compression bandages are applied to the calves and should be worn for 7 days. Patients can walk immediately after surgery.

What is recovery like after calf augmentation with implants?

After the compression bandages are removed, it is recommended that the patient wears a special compression garment for the next 3–4 weeks. This helps reduce the risk of swelling and bruising, which may occur during this period. Any mild tightness or discomfort typically subsides within 2 weeks of the surgery.

During recovery, avoid strenuous physical activities, prolonged standing, or extended walking.

When sitting or lying down, it is recommended to keep your legs slightly elevated on a pillow to promote circulation and reduce swelling.

Are there risks associated with calf augmentation with implants?

As with any surgery, there are risks of bleeding and infection. However, these risks are minimized when the procedure is performed in a completely sterile environment and by an experienced surgeon following strict protocols.

FAQ

Are the results of calf augmentation permanent?

Yes, the results of calf augmentation with implants are permanent, provided that the patient maintains a stable body weight.

  • Permanent improvement in the shape of the calves.
  • Quick recovery with the ability to resume daily activities
  • Increased self-confidence due to a more harmonious leg appearance.

Calf augmentation with implants carries certain risks, similar to other surgical procedures. Common risks include infection, bleeding, and the possibility of improper implant positioning. There is also a chance of scarring, changes in skin sensitivity in the treated area, and prolonged discomfort or pain. A qualified and experienced surgeon will use the latest techniques and follow strict protocols to ensure maximum patient safety.

This surgery is designed for individuals with underdeveloped or disproportionately thin calves due to genetic factors, muscle dystrophy, or injury. It helps achieve a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing appearance of the legs.

The most commonly used materials are special silicone implants that mimic the natural look and feel of the calves. In some cases, a patient’s own fat may be used, but this requires additional procedures.

The procedure takes about 1–2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. A horizontal incision is made in the back of the knee, and the implant is placed beneath the muscle fascia to ensure it is inconspicuous and appears natural.
