Surgical Neck Lift
Everything you need to know about a surgical neck lift
The skin on the neck is just as susceptible to aging, sagging, and wrinkles as the face. A smooth neck contour is associated with youthfulness, health, and vitality. To achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance, it’s important to include aesthetic treatments for the neck as well.
When anti-aging treatments such as mesotherapy, biorevitalization, PRP, or other non-invasive methods no longer provide satisfactory results, the only effective and long-lasting solution is a surgical neck lift.
What is a surgical neck lift, and why is it performed?
A surgical neck lift is a procedure designed to tighten all layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue while removing excess fat. This surgery can be performed on its own or as part of a comprehensive facelift.
As we age, the neck skin loses elasticity and begins to sag. Simultaneously, the muscles weaken, contributing to an overall older appearance. In addition to aging, significant weight loss can also cause a sagging and wrinkled neck.
A surgical neck lift provides the best results when performed as soon as the skin begins to sag but still retains some elasticity. For most individuals, this occurs between the ages of 40 and 60.
The most common reasons for a surgical neck lift include pronounced sagging of the neck skin and horizontal and vertical wrinkles that resemble necklace lines.
How is a surgical neck lift performed?
Before the surgery, a consultation is conducted where the patient discusses their desired outcomes with the surgeon. During this session, the surgeon examines the patient, outlines the possible procedures, and offers recommendations tailored to the individual’s case. Together, they decide on the approach, and photos of the patient’s neck are taken to compare the surgical results with the initial condition.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or short intravenous sedation.
The procedure begins with an incision made below and behind the ears, extending along the hairline at the nape of the neck. This placement ensures that any resulting scars remain as inconspicuous as possible. To address a double chin and access the anterior edge of the neck muscle, an additional incision is made under the chin. If the patient has excess fat in the neck area, it is removed through liposuction via this incision. The skin is then lifted, tightened, and any excess is trimmed.
The surgery typically lasts between 2 and 3 hours. Most patients are discharged on the same day, wearing an elastic bandage around the neck to support recovery.
What is the recovery period like after a surgical neck lift?
For the first 24 hours, you should rest in bed. During the initial follow-up appointment the next day, the elastic bandage will be removed, and the wound will be redressed. At this point, you can begin showering with lukewarm water. Antibiotics are prescribed for 7–10 days after the surgery. If you experience pain, you can take pain relievers recommended by your doctor. Sensations of tightness, numbness, or itching in the neck area are normal and part of the healing process. Stitches are typically removed 7–10 days after the surgery.
Swelling and bruising may occur, but to minimize these, it is recommended to sleep on your back with an elevated pillow for the first 7–14 days. During this period, avoid work and any strenuous physical activities. You can resume exercising, going to the gym, and performing heavy physical tasks six weeks after the surgery.
The results are noticeable immediately, with the final effects becoming apparent after three weeks when the swelling subsides. When exposed to sunlight, it is crucial to apply a high-SPF sunscreen (30–50+) over the scars to protect them.
How to prepare for a surgical neck lift?
Comprehensive preoperative preparation is conducted at our clinic and included in the price. It includes the following laboratory tests: complete blood count, basic biochemistry with coagulation factors, blood group, and Rh factor.
The preparation also includes:
- Internal medicine and cardiology evaluation with ECG
- Chest X-ray with a radiologist’s report
- Clinical evaluation by an anesthesiologist
If you are a smoker, it is essential to stop smoking at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the surgery, as smoking negatively affects circulation and wound healing, prolonging the recovery process.
If you are taking aspirin, vitamin C, or other supplements, discontinue their use at least one week before the procedure.
You must refrain from eating or drinking for at least 12 hours before the scheduled surgery. Additionally, you need to remove regular or gel nail polish from your fingernails, as well as all makeup, piercings, and jewelry. Avoid applying body lotion for 4–6 hours before the operation. If there is hair in the neck area, it should be removed before the surgery. It is necessary to bring personal hygiene items, a photo ID (ID card or passport), complete medical documentation, and any medications that are part of your chronic therapy.
Are there risks associated with a surgical neck lift?
As with any surgery, there are risks of bleeding and infection. However, these risks are minimized when the procedure is performed in a completely sterile operating room by an experienced surgeon adhering strictly to established protocols.
