Liposuction
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical body contouring method that involves removing excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body using a vacuum system. This procedure is also known as body sculpting because it helps shape the figure and achieve desired contours.
Liposuction removes excess fat tissue from various areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and more. This treatment targets body contouring and reduces volume in specific areas that exercise and diet cannot fully address.
At our clinic, we offer this service with the highest standards of safety and aesthetics.
Why is liposuction performed?
Liposuction is not a weight-loss method, so if your goal is to lose excess weight, this is not the right solution. However, if you have localized fat deposits in certain areas that cannot be eliminated through diet or exercise, liposuction is the method of choice.
Liposuction is most commonly performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, calves, back, and buttocks.
Who are good candidates for liposuction, and who are not?
You are a good candidate for liposuction if:
- You have elastic skin.
- You have good muscle tone.
- You have localized fat deposits that do not disappear despite diet and exercise.
- You are in good overall health.
You are not a good candidate for liposuction if:
- You are excessively overweight.
- You have loose skin.
- You have a history of deep vein thrombosis or are taking blood-thinning medications (e.g., warfarin).
How is body liposuction performed?
Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, the surgeon will examine you, listen to your goals and requests, and mark the areas to be treated. They will recommend the technique that will deliver the best results in your case and explain all the steps involved. Photographs will also be taken to compare the initial state with the final results.
The procedure involves making small incisions, approximately 3mm in length, through which a cannula is inserted into the targeted area. The cannula is connected to a vacuum system that removes excess fat. It is important to note that there are limits to the amount of fat that can be removed, as determined by the surgeon.
The duration of the procedure depends on the area being treated and can take 2–3 hours.
For minor liposuction, the patient can typically be discharged the same day. For larger areas, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for one additional day.
Immediately after the procedure, the patient begins wearing a special elastic compression garment that applies pressure to the treated area. This helps accelerate recovery, improve lymphatic drainage, and reduce pain, swelling, and bruising. The garment is usually worn for 4–6 weeks after liposuction.
Recovery after liposuction
Once the effects of anesthesia wear off, you may feel discomfort or pain in the treated areas. Anti-inflammatory medication is recommended for pain management, and walking around the room can also help. Pain typically begins to subside after 3–4 days. Swelling and bruising may appear in the liposuctioned areas but will gradually diminish. You will likely be prescribed antibiotics during the first week of recovery to prevent infection.
You can usually return to work within 5–7 days. Massages and light exercise are recommended as soon as pain subsides to aid recovery and improve results.
Are liposuction results immediately visible and permanent?
Liposuction results become visible once the swelling subsides. The fat cells removed during the procedure do not return, so the results are permanent as long as you maintain a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
However, if you consume more calories than your body needs, new fat cells can form in other parts of the body. Therefore, liposuction does not guarantee permanent slimness without maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Risks after liposuction
As with any surgery, there are risks of bleeding and infection. However, these risks are minimized when the procedure is performed in a completely sterile operating room by an experienced surgeon following strict protocols.
After liposuction, patients may experience numbness and pain accompanied by swelling and bruising. Some individuals may have temporary changes in sensitivity or skin discoloration. In rare cases, indentations in the treated areas or excess loose skin may occur. Small scars are left at the incision sites, but these fade over time and become nearly invisible.
