What is lip reduction and why is it done?
Lip reduction (decrease) is a surgical procedure that is intended for people who have naturally over-volumized lips. Using this procedure it is possible to decrease the volume of both lips, but it is more often the lower lip that is decreased which is unproportionally fuller than the upper lip. In this way, we correct the present discrepancy in the volume of the lips and possible asymmetry. The final look of the lips is also taken into account. The upper lip should have the shape of the letter M, and the lower lip of the letter W.
How is the lip reduction done?
The surgical lip reduction is usually performed under local anesthesia or IV analgosedation. A horizontal incision is made on the inner side of the lip, on the mucous membrane, so the scars are invisible. The excess of fat and other tissue is removed and the suture is made with self-degradable thread.
When only lower lip reduction is done, then most of the tissue is removed from the middle part of the lip. This procedure is called the “Brazilian“ or “bikini“ technique because the shape of three proportional triangles is achieved, just like a bikini.
The surgery lasts about an hour. The patient can go home right away after the surgery.
What does the recovery period look like?
For the first 2-4 days the lips are swollen, so it is recommended to put cold compresses on them. The patient should take antibiotics for 7 -10 after the surgery and if needed the painkillers that the surgeon recommended.
In this period, it is recommended to avoid any intense physical effort.
You can brush your teeth normally a day after the surgery. It is recommended to eat soft or blended food, not very hot.
Most of the patients go back to work within 2 – 3 days after the operation. The first check-up is 5-7 days after the surgery.
Are there any risks of lip reduction?
As with any surgery, there are risks of allergic reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, and infection, but they are brought to a minimum when the surgery is performed in a completely sterile operational room and when the procedure is conducted according to a strict protocol by an experienced surgeon.
