Our nose greatly defines the look of our face. If the nose is big, hooked, too wide, bulbous, bumpy, aquiline, asymmetric, or irregularly shaped, it is often the cause of dissatisfaction and low self-confidence. Sometimes, only a minute procedure is needed for the face to get a more harmonious and softer look. It is possible to do three types of rhinoplasty – tip rhinoplasty, septoplasty, and rhinoseptoplasty, depending on whether the tip of the nose is corrected, the length of the nose is shortened, the width of the nostrils is narrowed, or a bump at the root of the nose is removed.

Why is nose correction surgery done?

Rhinoplasty, i.e. nose job is performed to correct the damage of the nose, solve the breathing problem caused by the deviation of the nasal septum, but also for aesthetic reasons. If the reasons for the surgery are only aesthetic you should wait for the surgery until the nasal bone stops growing. That usually happens at the age of 15 in girls, and at the age of 18 in boys.

What preparation do you need for nose correction surgery?

The complete process of preparation for the surgery is done at our clinic and included in the price. it includes all the necessary laboratory analyses complete blood tests results, basic biochemical analysis with the coagulation factors, blood type, and RH factor. The complete process of preparation for the surgery is done at our clinic and is included in the price. It also includes :

  • Internist and cardiovascular examination with ECG
  • Lung X-ray with a radiologist's reportLung X-ray with radiologist's report
  • Clinical examination by an anesthesiologist.

If you are a smoker, you will need to stop smoking a few weeks before the operation as smoking negatively affects the circulation and wound healing process, and expands the period of recovery.

You will need to stop taking aspirin and any anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen three to five days before the intervention because they affect increased bleeding. At the same time, you will need to start taking anticoagulants to prevent blood clogs.

What you need to know is that at least 6-8 hours before the planned surgery, you should stop taking any food or drinks. You need to remove nail polish or gel polish from your fingernails. It is necessary to remove the complete makeup from the face and any piercings and jewelry. Do not apply face cream 4-6 hours before the operation.

It is necessary to bring personal hygiene items and a personal document with a picture (ID card or passport), complete medical documentation and any medications that are part of your chronic therapy.

How is nose correction done?

The most important part of the process is the consultative exam during which the patient explains what kind of problem they want to solve with the surgery. Then the preoperative marking is done. The surgeon must know if there are any functional problems such as breathing difficulties due to allergies or nose deviation or the patient only wants a cosmetic intervention. If you want a prettier nose that suits your facial proportions and features better, you will find out which surgical technique can achieve which effect from the conversation with the surgeon. We make sure to take photos of the nose from various angles to compare the outcome with the original condition.

The nose correction surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Tip rhinoplasty

In the surgery of the tip of the nose, a modification of the cartilage of the nose is done, which at the same time improves the function and the look of the nose. This surgery can shorten or extend the tip of the nose, correct the “hooked” nose, correct the tip of the nose that “turns” to one side, or narrow the bulbous nose. Two techniques can be used:

  • The closed technique (the incisions are made inside the nose on the mucous membrane),The closed technique (the incisions are made inside the nose on the mucous membrane),
  • The open technique (the incisions are made along the columella, i.e. under the tip of the nose on the part which connects the nostrils. The open technique (the incisions are made along the columella, i.e. under the tip of the nose on the part which connects the nostrils.

Depending on the desired outcome, during the surgery, the cartilage and the skin of this part of the nose can be removed, shortened, or reconstructed. Afterward, the immobilization of nasal bone and cartilage is done with special tampons and the sutures are made.

The results may be weaker if the skin is thick and greasy, while much better results are achieved when the skin is thin and dry.

The operation lasts between 2 and 4 hours depending on the complexity of the procedure. The patient is released home after staying at the hospital for a day. The sutures and the mask (plaster) are removed in 7 days after the surgery.

Septoplasty

The main goat of the septoplasty is the correction of the septum, the partition between the nostrils, which is deformed. The deformity leads to changes in the nasal mucosa, increases nasal discharge, and nasal congestion so the patient breaths primarily through the mouth.

The main reasons for septoplasty are:

  • Difficulties with breathing through the nose
  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • Frequent sinusitis
  • Headaches cause by sinusitis
  • Snoring and “sleep apnea”.

Septoplasty involves shortening and moving the nasal partition with the placement of the cartilage and the nasal bone in the central position. The incision is usually made in the inner part of the nose and sometimes between the nostrils. Then, the nose is immobilized with special tampons. A mold and Band-Aids are placed from the outside. The tampons are changed in 3-4 days, the compressive mask and Band-Aids in 7 days.

The surgery lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. The patient’s condition is followed for several hours, and then they usually go home.

Rhinoseptoplasty

Rhinoseptoplasty includes two interventions at the same time the cosmetic surgery that achieves a prettier shape and better appearance of the nose and septoplasty, which solves the physiological problem caused by a deformity of the septum. The cosmetic part of the rhinoseptoplasty can solve:

  • a bumpy nose (rhinokyphosis)
  • a crooked nose (rhinoscoliosis)
  • an overextended nose (macro line)
  • a wide nose (pachyrino)
  • a nose with a dent or saddle (rhino lordosis).

With the shortening and movement of the nasal septum and the placement of cartilage and nasal bone in the central position, the nose is reconstructed in terms of achieving the desired aesthetic effect. The incision is usually made in the inner part of the nose, but sometimes between the nostrils. Then, the nose is immobilized with special tampons. A mold and Band-Aids are placed from the outside. The tampons are changed in 3-4 days, the compressive mask and Band-Aids in 7 days.

The surgery lasts 2-3 hours. The patient’s condition is followed for several hours, and then they can usually go home.

What is the recovery after the nose correction surgery?

The patient is usually given some pain relief medication in form of pills or an injection immediately after the surgery. For the first several days there is a bloody discharge from the nose. There are conspicuous swellings and bruises in the area of eyelids and face for the first 2-4 days, but they subside within 10-14 days. It is recommended to put cold compresses on it. The patient should breathe through the mouth and sleep on a very elevated pillow for at least a month.

For the first 7 days, the patient must not take hot showers because the tampons may fall out and the compression mask may fall off due to exposure to the steam, which must not happen.

For the first month:

  • Do not blow your nose. The local application of nasal sprays contributes to cleaning the inside of the nostrils from blood clots and scabs and therefore facilitates breathing.
  • Avoid exposure to great physical exertion
  • Avoid wearing clothes that are pulled over the head.
  • Do not wear glasses.
  • Eat soft, mushy, or mashed food, and make sure to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with a disinfectant after every meal.

Are there any risks or complications?

As with any surgery, there are risks of allergic reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, and infection, but they are brought to a minimum when the surgery is performed in a completely sterile operational room and when the procedure is conducted according to a strict protocol by an experienced surgeon.
