Why is a surgical neck lift done?

A surgical neck lift is a procedure that achieves tightening of all skin layers and subcutaneous tissues, by removing excess fat. This procedure can be done separately or as a part of a total facelift procedure.

As we age, the skin loses its elasticity and it starts sagging. At the same time, the muscle becomes weaker and for that reason, we look older. Besides the aging process, the reason for saggy and wrinkled neck skin can be a considerable weight loss, as well. A surgical neck lift provides the best results when the skin just starts to loosen while it is still elastic. For most people, it is between the age of 40 and 60.

Conspicuous, saggy neck skin, as well as the horizontal and parallel wrinkles shaped as a neckless, are the most common reasons for a surgical neck lift

How is the surgical neck lift done?

Before the surgery, a consultative exam is performed, during which the patient explains to the surgeon which effect they would like to be achieved with the surgical neck lift. At the same time, the surgeon performs the exam and informs the patient about possibilities, and suggests the best thing to do in that particular case. The decision is made together, and after that, a photo of the patient is taken to compare the outcome of the surgery with the original condition later.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or short intravenous sedation.

The surgery begins by making an incision that starts under and behind the ears and finishes along the hairline on the back of the head in the nape. Thanks to this kind of incision, the scars will be maximally hidden. To remove the double-chin and approach the front edge of the neck muscle, another incision is made under the chin. If the patient has fat deposits on this part, it is removed by liposuction. Then, the skin of the neck is lifted and tightened and its excess is removed.

The surgery lasts between 2 and 3 hours. The patient is usually released from the hospital on the same day with an elastic bandage around the neck.

What is the recovery period after a surgical neck lift?

You should spend the first 24 hours resting in bed. The next day, you have a check-up, when the bandage is removed and the wound dressing is changed. After that, you can have a shower with lukewarm water. Anti-biotics are taken 7-10 days after the surgery. If you experience pain, you should take the painkillers that the doctor recommends. If you feel the tightness of the neck skin, numbness, or itchiness, you do not have to be concerned as it is a part of the healing process. The suture is removed on the 7th day after the operation.

The occurrence of swelling and hematoma is possible, and to make them smaller, it is suggested to sleep on your back with an elevated pillow for the first 7-14 days. It is not recommended to go to work in this period and to expose yourself to any greater physical effort.

The effects are visible immediately, and the final effects after only 2 weeks when the swelling disappears. When you expose yourself to the sun, it is essential to apply suncream with a high protection factor ( SPF 30 – 50+) over the scar.
