Botox - Everything you need to know
What is botox?
Botox is a diluted botulinum toxin that blocks the work of neurotransmitters that transfer the signals to the nerves that cause muscle contractions. This causes a temporary relaxation of the muscles that make wrinkles when they contract.
What is achieved with Botox?
Mimic wrinkles are the wrinkles we notice first on our faces. Botox is injected exactly into those muscles that cause wrinkles around the eyes, on the forehead, and between the eyebrows when they move. In this way, it reduces the existing wrinkles and prevents new wrinkles from forming. The skin remains smooth and without lines in those zones.
Why is it important to inject Botox in all three zones?
In order to have a harmonious look on the face, all three zones must be treated. If only one zone was treated the face would look like half-dyed grey hair.
Will you get a “frozen face“ from Botox?
When the treatment is performed by an experienced professional who knows face anatomy perfectly and injects the precise doses of Botox, there is no risk of getting a “frozen face“. Only certain muscles that make wrinkle by its contraction will relax.
Is there any preparation needed for the Botox treatment?
No special preparation is needed before the Botox treatment. Only people who take anticoagulant medicine are recommended to stop taking them to avoid bruising. You should not take aspirin, ibuprofen, and such, and it is also advisable to stop taking herbal medicines that contain St.John’s Wort and ginseng for the same reasons.
What do you feel during the treatment?
The injection of Botox is not painful as the needles we use are extremely thin. An experienced cosmetic professional knows exactly how and where to inject so it does not hurt. If a person has a very low pain threshold, a topical anesthetic in the form of a cream can be applied before the treatment, as well as cold compresses before and after the treatment.
How long does the treatment last?
The whole treatment lasts just a couple of minutes.
How will you feel after Botox treatment?
Immediately after Botox treatment, you can feel a slight tingling in the place of injection, and a small swelling of the size of mosquito bite may appear there. Both disappear within 30 minutes.
One eyebrow might rise more than the other one in the first ten days. However, the eyebrows will level soon, i.e. be at the same line. If the eyebrows do not level within 2-3 weeks, it is corrected by injecting an additional dose of Botox into one side of the forehead.
When does Botox start functioning?
Botox does not function immediately. The first effects are seen in 2-3 days and the full effect in 14 days after the treatment. From that moment on, you will look 5-7 months younger.
Are there any side effects?
Some people may experience headaches or symptoms that feel like the flu. If this is the case, it is recommended to take paracetamol. Some persons may feel symptoms of dry or watery eyes.
What should you do after Botox therapy?
Within the first 24 hours:
- Do not touch or massage the face in the treated zones
- Do not bend your head forward.
- Do not work out or expose yourself to intense physical efforts.
- On the first night after the treatment sleep on your back because Botox can overflow, i.e. migrate if you sleep on your stomach or side
- Do not drink alcohol.
- Do not go to the sauna, tanning bed, beach, and do not take a hot bath.
- Do not expose yourself to extremely low temperatures.
- Do not put on makeup.
- Do not pluck your eyebrows.
- Do not use creams with retinol.
- Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, and other medicine that affect blood coagulation.
- Do not travel by plane.
Do not have any other facial treatment for two weeks after the Botox treatment.
How long do the effects of Botox last?
The effects of Botox usually last 3-6 months..
Will the face look older when the Botox effect wears off?
It will not. As Botox prevents mimic movements that lead to wrinkle formation, the muscles under the influence of Botox forget those movements. And therefore, after the effect of Botox wears off, you will make those facial expressions that caused wrinkles less often.
With which other treatment does the Botox treatment combine well?
Botox combines greatly with Hyaluronic acid fillers which improve the skin tone and give it a fresh look.
What medical benefits can Botox have?
Although Botox is usually associated with cosmetic purposes, this substance is used for medical purposes as well. Some of the medical problems with which Botox has great results are:
- chronic migraines (it reduces the frequency of migraine attacks)
- hyperhidrosis - excessive sweating of the face, hands, armpits, and feet
- Cervical dystonia – a painful condition followed by involuntary neck spasms, so the head moves and nods uncontrollably
- Grinding teeth
- Blepharospasm – spasm of eyelid muscles with involuntary blinking (Botox eliminates blinking for a couple of months).
Who should not undergo Botox treatment?
People who suffer from Myasthenia Gravis, asthma, lung emphysema, some neurological diseases, or have bleeding problems should not use Botox. Botox treatment is not recommended to pregnant and breastfeeding women either.
